Waterproof Drawstring Bag Materials Explained
No drawstring-bag material is “waterproof” by name alone. A fabric may resist water penetration while the finished bag still leaks through needle holes, cord exits, an unsealed bottom seam or the gathered opening. Coated polyester: the most versatile starting point
Coated polyester is common for promotional backpacks, sports sacks and travel organizers because the woven face can provide useful dimensional stability, color options and decoration routes while a back coating reduces penetration. “PU-coated polyester” is still not a complete specification.
Record at least:
- base-fabric article, weave, denier and mass;
- coating chemistry as supplied and which side is coated;
- coating or total composite mass, using the supplier’s agreed measurement basis;
- color and any face-side water-repellent finish;
- resistance result before and after required flexing, abrasion or aging;
- print and heat-processing compatibility; and
- whether seams require tape, liquid sealant or no sealing for the intended claim.
PU is used as a broad commercial label across many formulations. Its feel, flexibility, hydrolysis behavior, adhesion and heat response can differ. Approve the actual material article rather than accepting “PU” as a quality grade.
Laminated polyester or nylon: a more defined barrier layer
Lamination joins a textile face to a separately formed film or membrane.A continuous film can provide a more visible barrier architecture than a very light back coating, but the final result depends on film thickness, adhesive system, bonding uniformity, flex durability and sewing or welding method.

TPU-laminated textiles are one possible route where flexibility or compatible thermal joining is important, but the abbreviation alone does not prove a composition, safety profile, environmental benefit or sealing performance. Coated nylon: flexible, but not automatically better
Nylon can provide a soft hand and useful toughness-to-weight balance in some constructions.It may also respond differently from polyester to moisture, heat, dyes, coatings and dimensional change. The choice should follow the finished use rather than a claim that one fiber is always stronger or more waterproof.
Compare actual construction samples for:
- tear and abrasion behavior at the selected fabric weight;
- barrier performance before and after flexing;
- coating adhesion and crease whitening;
- colorfastness and dimensional behavior under the care route;
- print adhesion and heat sensitivity; and
- finished-bag shape under load.

PVC-coated textiles and flexible films
PVC-coated fabric or flexible PVC film can create a continuous, wipeable surface and may support heat-welded construction when the full material system is compatible. It can also be heavier or stiffer than lightweight coated textiles, and cold-flex, odor, migration, restricted-substance and disposal questions can be important for a particular market.
Do not infer these points from transparency, softness or a product photograph. Specify the actual polymer, thickness, plasticizer or restricted-substance requirements where relevant, operating temperature, joining method and test plan.If the brief calls for another transparent flexible film—such as EVA-, TPU- or other marketed film—confirm the precise resin and evidence rather than using the trade name as proof.
Polyethylene-based sheets and nonwoven laminates
Some lightweight sacks use polyethylene-based films, coated nonwovens or multi-layer laminates. They may suit short programs, simple separation or low-cost moisture barriers, but fold fatigue, puncture resistance, seam tearing, print adhesion and recyclability claims require construction-specific review.

Waxed canvas and treated natural-fiber fabrics
Waxed or otherwise treated cotton/canvas may shed light rain and deliver a distinctive tactile appearance.It is generally a different proposition from a continuous polymer barrier: finish distribution, creasing, rub-off, temperature response, care and reproofing can affect performance and appearance.
Use this route when aesthetic aging and moderate weather resistance fit the program. Do not present untreated cotton as waterproof, and do not promise a treated canvas will remain unchanged through washing or long storage without evidence. A face finish is not the same as a back coating
A durable water-repellent-type face finish is intended to reduce surface wetting; a continuous coating or laminate is intended to resist passage through the structure. A bag may use both, one or neither.
ISO 4920:2012 describes a spray test for resistance to surface wetting. ISO explicitly notes that the method does not measure water penetration and is not intended to predict rain-penetration resistance. A strong spray rating should therefore not be rewritten as “the bag is waterproof.”
ISO 811:2018 specifies a hydrostatic-pressure method for fabric resistance to water penetration and covers fabrics intended to be water resistant, with or without a water-resistant or water-repellent finish.The result belongs to the tested fabric specimen and conditions; it does not close the cord opening or seal needle holes in a completed bag.
Specify the barrier as a measurable construction
The phrase “waterproof coating” should be replaced by fields that can survive sampling and reorders.

The opening usually sets the performance ceiling
Pulling two cords creates gathered folds; it does not create a pressure-tight seal. Water can enter from above, collect inside the channel or track along the cord. Adding more coating to the body does not solve that geometry.
Possible design responses include:
- a taller extension collar that folds before the cords are tightened;
- an external storm flap over the gathered channel;
- a coated lining that forms a secondary compartment;
- top orientation that sheds rather than catches spray;
- a drainage decision when wet contents must not trap water; or
- changing to a roll-top, zipper-sealed or specialist enclosure when the requirement exceeds a drawstring design.
The last option is often the honest answer. Material substitution cannot overcome an unsuitable closure.

Do not specify seam tape without confirming compatibility between the tape, barrier surface, temperature, pressure and seam geometry. A beautiful tape line is not proof of adhesion after flexing or storage.
Reinforcements can puncture the barrier
Bottom corner patches, metal eyelets and cord loops carry concentrated loads.They can also create holes or stiff transitions where a coating cracks. The design team must decide whether the lower corners sit inside or outside the protected compartment and how each penetration is sealed.

Decoration can reduce water resistance
Embroidery punctures the panel. Sewn labels add holes. Heat transfers can expose coatings to temperature and pressure.Some inks or pretreatments may not adhere well to low-surface-energy or water-repellent faces.

A new flat swatch can perform better than a finished bag after folding and use. Consider whether the program needs retesting after:
- repeated opening and closing of the cord channel;
- loaded carry cycles and anchor movement;
- flexing at bottom folds and side seams;
- surface abrasion against equipment or floors;
- logo application and heat processing;
- cleaning or wipe cycles permitted by the care instruction;
- warm, humid or cold storage relevant to the route; and
- packed compression followed by recovery.
Acceptance criteria should be agreed before sampling. Do not choose a test only after seeing a favorable result.

Packing and storage can damage barrier layers
Coated surfaces can block together, develop permanent creases or transfer finish under heat and pressure. Packing a damp bag can also create odor or appearance problems even when the shell resists water.
Approve:
- fold lines and whether the coating sits against itself;
- tissue, separator or individual packing needs;
- bag moisture condition before packing;
- carton count and compression;
- storage temperature/humidity assumptions;
- recovery time after unpacking; and
- first-in-first-out controls for materials with shelf-life limits.
Do not increase carton density until a conditioned pack-out sample is reviewed.

An ordinary sewn sack with a gathered cord opening should not be assumed fully waterproof. Needle holes and top gaps are predictable ingress paths.Define the exposure and consider sealed seams plus a different closure if near-zero ingress is required.
Does a spray test prove waterproofness?
No. ISO 4920 assesses resistance to surface wetting and specifically does not measure penetration. Use the method only for the question it answers.
What hydrostatic-head result should a bag have?
There is no universal value for every drawstring-bag application. The buyer should set a technically justified threshold based on exposure, fabric, product risk and market requirements, then separately validate seams and the finished bag.
Can waterproof bags be screen printed?
Often, but not with every ink and surface finish. Test adhesion, rub, flexing and water exposure on the exact production fabric. Low-surface-energy finishes and some coatings may require another branding route.
Is PVC the best waterproof drawstring bag material?
It is one possible barrier construction, not a universal best. Flexibility, mass, temperature, welding, odor, chemical restrictions, appearance and end-of-life goals may favor another film or coated textile.
Can recycled polyester be waterproof?

Specify the whole protection system
The best material is the one that meets the required exposure after it has been cut, decorated, joined, loaded, flexed and packed. Define the shell barrier, then trace every interruption through the seams, opening, cord anchors and logo. If the closure cannot meet the risk, change the architecture rather than exaggerating the claim.
